Privacy Policy

The Short Version

Our north star is reducing your property tax burden — all property taxes. We believe property taxes are fundamentally unequitable: as long as they exist, you never truly own your home. Your county is essentially an all-powerful HOA that can — and routinely does — seize homes from families who fall behind. We fully advocate for a more equitable means of funding state and local services, and until that day comes, we're here to fight for every dollar you keep.

That mission shapes how we treat your data. We collect only what we need to provide our service. We don't sell your information — ever. We use your property details solely to help you protest your assessment. That's it.

Who We Are

Home Tax Defense LLC is the data controller responsible for your information. We're a Texas limited liability company. If you have any questions about how we handle your data, reach out at support@hometaxdefense.com.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password. We use this to identify you and communicate with you about your account and protests.

Property Information

You provide us with property details including addresses, photos, condition assessments, and related documents. This information is used exclusively to help you build your protest packet.

Usage Information

We automatically collect basic information about how you use our service, like pages visited and features used. This helps us improve the product and troubleshoot issues.

Children's Privacy

Our service is intended for adults 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll delete it promptly.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and improve our services
  • To generate your property tax protest packets
  • To communicate with you about your account
  • To send important updates about the service
  • To respond to your questions and support requests
  • To comply with applicable laws and regulations

We do not use your information for targeted advertising, and we do not profile you in ways that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

What We Don't Do

  • We don't sell your data. Your information is not for sale, period.
  • We don't share without consent. Your property details stay private unless you explicitly request otherwise (like asking for a contractor estimate).
  • We don't spam you. We'll only email you about things that matter for your protest.
  • We don't run ads. We have no advertising partners, no tracking pixels, no data brokers.
  • We don't profile you. We don't use your data to make automated decisions with legal or significant effects on you.

Information Sharing

We only share your information in these limited circumstances:

  • With your consent: When you explicitly ask us to share something (for example, if you request a repair estimate from our contractor network, we'll share the relevant photos and details you've selected with contractors — but only when you initiate this request)
  • Service providers: Companies that help us run our service under strict confidentiality agreements (see list below)
  • Legal requirements: If required by law or to protect rights and safety
  • Business transfers: If Home Tax Defense LLC is ever acquired or merged, your data may transfer to the new owner under the same privacy protections. We will notify you by email before any such transfer occurs and you will have the opportunity to delete your account before the transfer takes effect.

Third-Party Service Providers

To run our service, we work with a small number of trusted third parties. Each receives only the data necessary to do their job. As required by the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA § 541.105), we maintain written Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) with all third-party processors, specifying processing purpose, confidentiality obligations, and security requirements.

  • Web hosting and email: Our servers and email infrastructure are self-hosted on a private VPS. Your data does not leave our own servers for hosting or email delivery purposes.
  • Sentry: Error monitoring and crash reporting. Sentry receives technical error logs to help us fix bugs — never your property or personal data directly. Governed by a DPA with Sentry, Inc.
  • RentCast: Property valuation data provider. When you use comp analysis features, we send your property address to RentCast to retrieve publicly available market data. No personal account information is shared. Governed by RentCast's data processing terms.
  • Stripe: Payment processing for paid subscriptions. Stripe handles your card data directly — we never see or store your full payment information. Governed by Stripe's Data Processing Agreement.

Contractor Estimate Requests

We offer an optional feature that lets you request repair estimates from contractors in our network. Here's how your privacy is protected:

  • Opt-in only: Your photos and property information are never automatically shared with contractors. You must explicitly request an estimate.
  • You control what's shared: When you request an estimate, only the information relevant to that specific repair issue is shared.
  • No obligation: Receiving an estimate doesn't commit you to anything. You can choose whether to contact the contractor for actual repairs.
  • This is not selling data: We do not sell your information. If you choose to connect with a contractor, that's a service we facilitate at your request.

Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and at rest, secure servers, and limited access controls. However, no system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify affected individuals within 60 days as required by Tex. Bus. & Com. Code § 521.053, and will notify the Texas Attorney General if the breach affects 250 or more Texans.

Your Rights (Texas TDPSA & Beyond)

Under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act and other applicable laws, you have meaningful rights over your data. We take these seriously — this isn't fine print, it's how we actually operate.

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Correction: Ask us to fix inaccurate information in your account
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated personal data
  • Portability: Get a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Opt out of sale: We don't sell your data — but you have the right to opt out if we ever change that (we won't)
  • Opt out of targeted advertising: We don't do targeted advertising — but same story
  • Opt out of profiling: We don't profile you in ways that produce legal or significant effects
  • Appeal: If we deny your request, you can appeal by emailing us and we'll review it within 60 days

We'll respond to verified requests within 45 days. If we need more time, we'll let you know. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@hometaxdefense.com.

Cookies

We use essential cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. We don't sell cookie data. You can disable cookies in your browser, but the service won't work properly without session cookies.

Data Retention

We keep your account and property information as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we may retain your data for up to 30 days solely to allow you to recover your account if you change your mind. After 30 days, your account and all associated personal data are permanently deleted. We do not retain personal data beyond this window for analytics or any other purpose.

If you need your data deleted immediately without the 30-day retention period, contact us at support@hometaxdefense.com and we'll process your request promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy occasionally. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when changes were actually made — not today's date. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you through the service or by email. Your continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
